Assessments

    Care assessments and CareScout resources

Most long-term care claims include an assessment of the insured’s functional and cognitive status, used to test the policy’s benefit trigger and to shape the plan of care. CareScout publishes resources and provider tools referenced by Genworth policyholders. Golden Age Companions makes no claim of CareScout network membership and does not conduct or influence assessments.

    What happens in an assessment

    • A nurse or assessor reviews the insured’s ability to perform activities of daily living.
    • Cognition is evaluated, often with standardized screening.
    • The home environment and fall risk are observed.
    • Current care arrangements and support from family are documented.
    • Findings inform the benefit determination and the plan of care.

    How to prepare

    • Have a family member present who sees the person on typical days.
    • Keep a two-week log of what help was actually given and when.
    • List medications, recent falls, hospitalizations, and physician contacts.
    • Do not tidy away the evidence of difficulty — the grab bars, the shower chair, the pill organizer all tell the assessor something true.
    • Answer honestly. Coaching an assessment damages credibility across the whole claim.
